Abbreviate thousand in Excel

K comes from the Greek word kilo which means a thousand. This abbreviation is very helpful as it helps us read the number without counting the number of zeros in a number.

Here’s how you can use K to abbreviate a thousand.

  1. Select the cells you want to shorten with a K in your Excel sheet.
  2. Right-click and go to format cells
  3. Choose Custom and type the following in the text box.
#,K

That’s it.

If you have smaller numbers in the selected cells and you want to keep them unchanged, you can change the formula to use “K” for only cells with numbers greater than 999.

Here’s how:

[>999]#,"K";#
